ogdensburg-public-library-3

Congratulations to David Jones, Steve Metras and the rest of the fine people at Victory Lifts. Their submission of photos from the Ogdensburg Public Library has earned them the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for November, 2016.

ogdensburg-public-library-4It is an interesting application. The enclosure design was expanded to include the entire upper landing of an adjacent stairway. This allows for passengers to travel safely in comfort in a region where winter weather can be harsh.

Interstingly, the area was also where Nazi fighter pilot Franz Xaver Baron von Werra landed in a rowboat after apparently being the only Axis prisoner of war to ever escape Canadian custody. It happened in 1940 during WWII. He eventually made it back to Germany in 1941 via the USA, Mexico, South America and Spain. It is also the only US port on the great St. Lawrence River.

Garaventa BC Wins POM with CPL Vertical Lift

The Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for December, 2016 has now been selected. Congratulations to Don Sanchez, Barry Sherman and the rest of the folks at Garaventa Lift BC in Port Moody for capturing their second Project of the Month honors. Their installation of a Garaventa Elvoron CPL Vertical Platform Lift at Open Road Land Rover and Jaguar in Langley, BC is the winner!

This marks the first time that an Elvoron CPL vertical platform lift installation has been showcased. We figured it was about time we gave the CPL some love. A notoriously difficult product to capture in photos, the CPL represents the most robust, durable vertical platform lift available. Also, it features the look and feel of a full-cab elevator, but with constant-pressure controls. img_6362-2Entrances are guarded by steel fire-rated hallway doors, controlled by the lift to ensure safety.Elvoron CPL vertical platform lift

Although popular in Canada for decades, full-cab vertical platform lifts are also becoming more popular in various other regions of the world. They provide an alternative to standard vertical lifts which have platforms with half-height sidewalls and no ceilings. img_6367-2They are especially popular for applications such as this one – an automotive dealership with the Parts and Service Departments located on the mezzanine.

In this case, the use of a CPL could also represent an economical alternative to a LULA elevator, as it would be about half the price to install and requires much less maintenance than a LULA.

Typically, inclined lifts are installed as part of a renovation. The lifts are often required to bring commercial spaces in to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) before the business is granted an Occupancy Permit and is allowed to open to the public.

IMG_0109In this case the owners of DPS, Jeffrey and Diane Steves, decided to proactively improve accessibility within their stylish studio. The lift is painted a custom shade of black to blend in with the surrounding stair railings.

Providing accessibility within a theater or lecture hall can be a challenge for even the most experienced accessibility contractors. Fortunately, the Garaventa GSL Artira represents a unique solution that can be made to fit over almost any set of stairs.

Platform LiftDesigners at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC were faced with this kind of challenge when looking to provide accessibility in a lecture theater. Garaventa was able to design an inclined platform lift solution that featured IMG_20170502_113319a drive box cabinet hidden behind a wall. This allows for the drive box to be located away from the pedestrian and lift traffic.

IMG_1525-editThis month we have selected a small Genesis Shaftway vertical lift installed at the very first Nutella Café in Chicago. Noah Szporn, head of marketing at Nutella North America was quoted in USA Today, “There’s an incredible dining culture in this city, and Nutella is all about the idea of sharing good food with friends and family. We thought that Chicago would be the perfect place to do that.”

The Garaventa Lift is painted white and includes power IMG_1526-editdoor operators on both the lower and upper landings. A small shaftway vertical lift is a common, user-friendly accessibility solution for many new retail and light commercial spaces.

A big thank you and congratulations to Martin Crowley and the crew at Midwest Accessibility Products of Cincinnati, Ohio. Their installation of three Genesis Enclosure IMG_0561-editvertical platform lifts has earned them their first Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for July, 2017.

The project was commissioned by the Housing Authority of Morehead, Kentucky. This follows an earlier project at the IMG_0236-editsame housing complex five years ago. At the time, they chose two Genesis Enclosures. Clearly, the experience was a good one as they opted to purchase three more. These are vertical platform lifts including IMG_0560-editfactory-made aluminum enclosures with bronze plexiglas enclosure panels. This represents a modular accessibility solution, requiring very little special preparation.

Oakland vertical lift nets August POM

This month we are profiling a beautiful Genesis Opal vertical lift. It is installed prominently at the new Wolf Restaurant in Oakland, California. Vertical Platform LiftThe Genesis Opal provides an ADA-compliant accessibility solution. Wheelchair users and other members of the public who have difficulty using stairs will be able to utilize it.

Vertical Platform Wheelchair LiftIn this case, the Opal is used at the front entrance to the restaurant because the main entrance is located above grade. This is a very common accessibility problem. The lift is a good solution because it takes up much less room than a switchback ramp. It is also easier to use for people in wheelchairs. Wolf Restaurant OaklandThe owners opted to include a beautiful, ornate steel gate at the entrance. The gate blocks off the lift after hours, protecting it from misuse or vandalism. The gate and the lift were painted to match.

Congratulations to Adam Bey, Henry Handel, Tony Bey and the rest of the gang at Handel & Sons Elevator of Kent, Ohio.  Their submission of photos from the historic Garfield Building in Downtown Cleveland has earned them their first Garaventa Lift Project of the Month.  The GarfieldThe Garfield Building was built in 1898, and is so named because the edifice was built by the two sons of President James Garfield.  In 2015, the building was in the news again as chunks of the decorative exterior fell off and smashed in to a parked Toyota minivan.  Thankfully, nobody was injured.  Since then, it has undergone extensive renovations and is now an upscale multi-unit residential building.

The application showcases a very common accessibility solution where the floor-to-floor Opal Vertical Lifttravel distance is less than five feet.  The product used is a Garaventa Genesis Opal, model GVL-OP-42.  The lift is floor-mounted with an autofold ramp at the lower landing for access to the platform.  Opal VPLThe lower landing call station is located clear of the door swing to make it easy to use.  It is the standard color of satin grey along with champagne anodized aluminum components.

The lift is also equipped with several optional features, Garaventa vertical liftincluding laminated glass panels in both gates, powered gate operators, braille push buttons, courtesy lights and a hands-free emergency telephone.
