Garaventa Artira provides access to school gymnasium

Grand Ridge School

Designed to fit a tight lower landing

The installation of a Garaventa GSL Artira inclined platform lift at Grand Ridge Grade School in Grand Ridge, Illinois has been named the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for July, 2015.

The lift was installed to solve a common accessibility problem in older schools – that of a gymnasium located at the bottom of a short flight of stairs. Typically, these areas are not serviced by elevators. To make matters more challenging, often there are very tight clearances at the upper and lower landings, such as was the case at Grand Ridge Grade School. The answer was an Artira designed with a drop-down lower landing configuration.

Public Accessibility

In this article, we examine public accessibility for people with disabilities. How did the movement towards a more accessible society begin?  First, let’s get some perspective.

On July 26, 1990, at a signing ceremony at the White House, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since then, awareness of the ADA requirements and compliance with them has become universal in new commercial construction. There is no doubt that this legislation has had a profound effect on the business of manufacturing, installing and servicing accessibility equipment.

However, this law did not represent the beginning of the trend towards greater public accessibility. The seeds for that were planted much earlier by shifts in public policy and the laws enacted to ban discrimination based on race, ethnic origin and gender. This was followed by similar legislation way back in 1973 which banned discrimination on the basis of disability by recipients of federal funds.

This really meant that, for the first time ever, society began to take responsibility for providing greater inclusion of people with disabilities. Before that, the prevailing thought was that the exclusion of people with disabilities was a direct consequence of their own limitations. (Mayerson, 1992)

By the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, the Disability Rights movement had sprouted with the founding of the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund which continues to provide a voice for the rights of the disabled today.

Increasing awareness and legislation was followed by the transformation of thousands of existing public places to allow for accessibility. This continues today; many publicly owned buildings in smaller communities remain inaccessible.

Through the 1980’s and 90’s, the use of platform lifts for wheelchairs started to become more widespread. The Safety Standard used as a basis for state safety regulations, ASME A17.1 became A18.1 in 1999. This separated the requirements for wheelchair platform lifts from the requirements for passenger elevators, which remain under A17.1. As the A18.1 has become further refined, it has been adopted as a safety standard for accessibility equipment by virtually every state in the USA.

dangerous-ramp-down-to-officesIn the early days, accessibility equipment was considered by some as the ugly stepchild of the elevator industry.  These were lighter-duty elevating devices that, when examined under the scrutiny of legislation intended for passenger elevators, could not possibly stack up. In some cases, the equipment was poorly designed to begin with. Now, the accessibility industry has matured, the equipment is better understood, and the solutions provided are legitimate, code-compliant and safe.

102_0238For the future, we will continue to see accessibility equipment used to provide solutions in commercial and public places. We are also seeing an upward trend with residential accessibility. As “Aging in Place” and “Universal Design” have now become common terms for designers of new homes, so has the use of residential elevators and stair lifts.

The August Project of the Month honors goes to Access Elevator & Lifts for their installation of a beautiful home elevator at Ever Glades Farm in North Kansas City, Missouri. The farm is known for offering first-class boarding facilities for show horses. The owners live on site in a home that was built around the turn of the century and has been meticulously maintained. Any upgrades or additions, such as the elevator, had to be very carefully planned.

They added louvers on one side of the hoist way exterior, keeping the view but reducing glare and heat from direct sunlight.

The owners chose to install an elevator because their bedroom is on the second floor and and they were experiencing increasing difficulty with the stairs. The choice of clear glass for the cab and hoistway walls give them a panoramic view of the farm while they travel quickly and safely between floors.

Genesis vertical platform lift installed at Starbucks Roastery in Seattle

Congratulations to Top Performing Seattle area Garaventa Lift representatives from Mobility Concepts: Brad Adams, Melissa Cleary and Scott Cleary. They have captured their first Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for September, 2015.

Coffee retail giant Starbucks has opened a flagship location for their new Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle. These locations will serve Starbucks Reserve coffee, carefully selected as the finest 1% of Starbucks coffee. Some varieties are so rare, they will never be available again.

In order to provide accessibility within the new upscale location, they needed two vertical platform lifts. Obviously, the quality of the equipment and it’s aesthetics had to be superior in order to be included in this prestigious project. The designers chose two Garaventa Genesis Enclosure vertical platform lifts, painted in a custom dark brown color.

Our Project of the Month for November features a small open vertical platform lift installed at the Morton Grove Public Library in Morton Grove, Illinois. The library has been in operation for the past 75 years, starting as a book exchange where they threw all of the books in a big barrel for readers to sort through.

The lift showcases a creative solution for fastening the lifting mechanism (mast). In this case, custom towers were fabricated to provide the structural support. The lift has a 90 degree entry/exit configuration, an auto-fold ramp for the lower landing and power operated gates.

The area has a very interesting history. Back in the late 1920′s and early 1930′s, it was well-known as a destination for illegal gambling. The area had many roadhouses, and perhaps the most famous was The Dells, supposedly run by Al Capone and his gang, just down the street from where the library now sits.

Congratulations to Canwest Elevator & Lifts of Calgary Alberta for their fantastic, inspiring program, “Give A Kid A Lift”. In conjunction with Easter Seals, Canwest employees dedicate time and resources to fundraising. Every year for the past 5 years, they have managed to raise enough funds and corporate support to allow for a lift to be installed of the home of a needy family.

This year, the recipients are the Hitchcock family, Andy, Jay and Caleb. 6-year-old Caleb has been diagnosed with polymicrogyria, the result of an underdeveloped brain. He now requires a lift to travel safely between floors. Caleb’s father Andy says, “We knew we needed help because we were lifting him all of the time everywhere.” Once the event organizers learned of the family’s struggles, they were selected to receive the lift.

Caleb Hitchcock can now travel safely between floors at home.

GARAVENTA LIFT ANNOUNCES NEW HOME ELEVATOR DOOR PACKAGES

modern home elevator

3-speed glass and stainless home elevator doors

Garaventa Lift is thrilled to announce the release of our new 3-speed side sliding elevator doors for home elevators. This new option will allow home owners and builders to create the same look and feel on their home elevator as a standard commercial passenger elevator.

Buyers can choose from three door packages:

The Standard Door Package features an accordion car gate and swinging hall doors by others. This arrangement has been the industry standard for years and continues to be available.

The Upgrade Door Package includes a 3-speed sliding elevator car door with swinging hall doors by others. This allows for the use of a swinging hall door which matches the other doors in the home. The accordion gate used in the Standard Door Package is replaced by a 3-speed automatic sliding elevator door for the cab.

The Premium Door Package includes 3-speed sliding elevator doors for both the cab and the hall doors. As the elevator approaches a landing, the car door engages with the hall door. Both doors slide open simultaneously, the same familiar way that sliding doors work on a commercial elevator.

The new 3-speed sliding elevator doors were revealed at the recent 2016 International Builders Show in Las Vegas to rave reviews. Plans are already underway to include Garaventa Home Elevators in the 2017 New American Home and the 2017 New American Remodeled Home.

HUOC1A recent installation of a vertical lift at The Hawaiian United Okinawa Association Center in Waipahu, Hawaii has been named the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for April, 2016.

The Association has an interesting history. It is a large organization of over 40, 000 members and acts as an umbrella group for 50 member clubs statewide.HUOC3 The Association, formed in 1951, played an important role in the Okinawa recovery efforts following the Second World War by sending clothes, livestock and other essentials. In fact, Okinawa (Japan’s southernmost island) was governed by the United States military from the end of WWII to 1972, when it was returned to Japan. During this time, The United Okinawan Association was acknowledged as the official representative of the Okinawan people in Hawaii.

The member clubs of the HUOA are made up of people whose ancestors immigrated to Hawaii from Okinawa. The aim of the Association is to, “preserve, perpetuate and promote the culture of Okinawa.”

LULA Elevator with Glass Doors

ThisLimited use limited application elevator with glass doors is an installation of an Elvoron LULA limited use limited application elevator, made by Garaventa Lift and installed by P.R. King & Sons. The application showcases the optional glass 2-speed sliding doors.

The building is the Eileen O’Connor Catholic College in Lewisham, Australia.

Eileen Rosaline O’Connor was an Australian Nun, who devoted her life in service to those less fortunate. In 1913, she founded the Society of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor from the bedroom of her home in Coogee.

Remarkably, she sustained a serious back injury when she was only three years old, resulting in a lifelong disability and constant pain. She was only 28 years old when she died. She may not have lived a long lifetime, but her example continues to inspire others today. She is considered a counted Servant of God, meaning that she is under consideration by the Catholic Church for possible canonization into sainthood.

The institution bearing her name has as one of its aims, “to provide a stimulating education designed to develop the whole student that enriches them socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, creatively, morally and spiritually.”  We are proud that the people in charge of the college chose Garaventa Lift and PR King & Sons to provide their new LULA Elevator.

Wheelchair Lift

Congratulations to Mike Doyle and the rest of the folks at Garaventa USA in New England. Their care and dedication has allowed a Boston woman to regain some of her freedom and independence. This installation occurred in spite of several obstacles, including a very tight time line. That is why this project has been named the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for July, 2016.

Because the lower landing of the lift is a public sidewalk, and because we needed to attach the lift to the brickwork, three variances were required from the State of Massachusetts. Often, this kind of red tape can delay a project for weeks, months or indefinitely. However, Susan Kron, the lift user and a woman who has been diagnosed with terminal ALS, had Mike Doyle of Garaventa Lift in her corner.195 botolph

Mr. Doyle is a long-time professional sales representative with Garaventa USA in New England. He worked diligently with the State to present the case for the variances. He worked with the factory in Surrey to accelerate the manufacturing process.

In his words, the lift, “allows Mrs Kron in her remaining days to get out of the house, to the doctor or simply to smell the flowers. As everyone on this end knows I became e a little bit attached to the project and specifically the cause as it and she became near and dear to my heart…I like to think this is what we are all about, helping those in need.”

195 St. Botolph (2) cropFor her part, Susan appreciates the effort. In a message to Mike after the lift installation was completed, she wrote, “Dear Mike, I wanted to let you know that the lift is fantastic. Thank you so much for all you did to usher us through the maze of regulations and rules. Being able to get out and about again means the world to me, and we couldn’t have done it without you.”

One of the coolest places to have a Garaventa Lift installed is the Oue Skyspace Skyslide. In fact, The Oue Skyspace slide has been named one of the 16 coolest things to do in Los Angeles by Forbes Magazine. It is a glass-enclosed slide which goes from the 70th floor to the 69th floor on the outside of the U.S. Bank Building in downtown Los Angeles, the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The slide is fully accessible because of a beautiful custom colored Genesis Enclosure unit installed right beside the slide entrance.

Watergate

We are very pleased to announce the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for September, 2016 – the X3 Inclined Platform Lift installation at the famous Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. After a $125 million, nine-year renovation, the hotel reopened recently.

“No need to break in,” its room key cards read—a nod to the infamous scandal of the Nixon administration that led to the president’s resignation. Originally designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti in 1961 to look like a sail on the Potomac, the hotel has been vacant since 2007. Its current owners tapped Israeli designer Ron Arad and Italian designer Moroso to update the architecture and restore some of hotel’s original structures, like the staircase and indoor pool. Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant designed the employee uniforms.

Thank you to Will Cromwell of Bedco Mobility in Baltimore for submitting the photos. The installation itself was more involved than what it might look like from the photos. The wall, you see, has a marble facade which will not bear any load. So the lift is actually attached to steel support posts behind the marble. The result is a clean-looking example of a custom-colored X3 Inclined Platform Lift installed at a pretty cool hotel. As proof of it’s coolness, the walls of the lobby bar are made from actual whisky bottles – nice.
